Matthew Perry is a well-known American actor who is most notably recognized for his roles in sitcom television, such as Friends and The Odd Couple. He was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to two heavily involved parents in theater.

Perry’s early years were marked by instability in his family life. Born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, he was adopted by Suzanne and John Bennett Perry of Bennington, Vermont. When Matthew was two years old, they moved back to their hometown of Ottawa, Kansas. Five years later, after a series of foster homes and military schools in the midwestern United States, Matthew’s mother reached out to her former nurse married Sharon Ulrick, who agreed to care for him. In contrast, Matthew’s mother served a prison sentence for armed robbery. He was then raised in Martins Ferry, Ohio, where he attended high school and developed his interest in sports and theater arts.

After doing several plays at a young age, he started to get attention from the industry and began his acting career with several television commercials. In 1986, he made his on-screen debut on ABC’s teen drama over the summer titled Malibu Shores. In 1994 Matthew landed one of his most notable roles as Chandler Bing on NBC hit sitcom Friends. His character became part of an ensemble cast that included Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. The series lasted ten seasons until 2004.

In 2009, he starred in an American adaptation of the British comedy The Odd Couple for CBS. The show was met with negative reviews from critics and only lasted three seasons. Perry also starred in Go On during the 2012-2013 season on NBC but was another short-lived television show that didn’t last long. On August 25, 2018, it was announced Matthew Perry would reprise his role as Chandler Bing for a mini-reunion this year on NBC’s tribute to Friends titled Icons. If you think you know your favorite star better, here are 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Matthew Perry:

# 1 -He Was Born In Williamstown, Massachusetts

He was born on August 19, 1969, to parents John Bennett Perry and Suzanne Marie Morrison. His mother was very supportive of her son throughout his childhood as he pursued acting before landing his first role at age 13 in the T.V. series “Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.”

# 2 – He Is The Youngest Of Four Children

Matthew Perry is the younger brother of three older siblings, all of whom are very successful actors. His sister, Christa, starred on a 1970s sitcom called “One Day At A Time,” while his other sisters Tracey and Emily, have both had minor roles in various television shows over the years.

# 3 – His Best Friends Are All Actors As Well

He is good friends with fellow Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as they’ve worked together on numerous projects since becoming friends back when they were all starting as struggling actors. It was their idea to make the movie “Dogma” together in the late 1990s because they were looking for a change of pace from their usual comedic material.

# 4 – He Worked As A Bartender For Two Years

After he quit “Friends,” Matt decided to work behind the bar at his place because it was something completely different and allowed him to get out of the house. After two years, however, he closed down the bar since he missed acting too much to remain there any longer.

# 5 – His First Movies Were Not Successful At All

Matthew Perry starred in the first two movies where both flops at the box office, which was very discouraging for him when trying to make it as an actor. The first one was “Fools Rush In,” which was released in 1997 and only grossed about $23 million on a budget of $25 million. His second movie, “The Whole Nine Yards,” was even worse as it didn’t even break the million-dollar mark at the box office.

# 6 – He Once Lost 20 Pounds Just For A Role

For his role in “Fever Pitch,” he had to lose weight to look more like a baseball player, so he went on an eating plan before starting the shoot. However, once they started filming, he stopped losing weight because he couldn’t stand being hungry anymore, so when it came time to interview him before release, all the press photos were taken from angles that hid his fuller figure.

# 7 – He Started Playing The Drums At Age 13

Matthew Perry started playing the drums in a band called “The Peddlers” and fellow actor Robert Hoffman during his high school years. They even opened for Iggy Pop once at The Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California.

# 8 – He Is A Big Fan Of Soccer

Since he was born in America but raised in Canada for much of his life, football (soccer) is one of his most knowledgeable sports other than hockey. Aside from supporting several L.A. teams over the years, including Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy, he also played on a celebrity team called Hollywood United F.C. Unfortunately, this team lost to Manchester United in 2007 after tying them 2-2 at halftime.

# 9 – He Is A Member Of The Trilateral Commission

More of a behind-the-scenes political organization, members of the Trilateral Commission include peers such as David Rockefeller and Prince Charles. Members are typically influential business and political leaders from North America & Western Europe. They meet every few months to discuss international events and the impact they have on important people.

# 10 – He Once had Bulimia In High School

Back when he was still struggling to find work as an actor, Matthew Perry developed bulimia because he believed he needed to be thin to land more roles, so he would eat a lot one day then throw it all up the next since that’s what he’d seen his female friends do. However, Matthew Perry’s bulimia stopped once he finally landed a role on “Second Chance” in 1987.

Conclusion:

Matthew Perry is one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood. He played Chandler on Friends and was nominated for five Emmy awards during his time with the show. After starring in a string of hit comedies throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, he took some time off from acting to focus on writing plays. These days you can catch him playing a recurring role as Ryan King on A Good Place or hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It might be hard to remember everything there is to know about him with all that’s going on in this talented actor’s life lately.
